Increase Your Lifespan 15 Minutes at a Time
Even 15 minutes of exercise per day may lower the risk of early death in older adults by one-fifth, according to the study whose findings were presented at the European Society of Cardiology meeting in Sophia Antipolis, France in June 2016.
The study included about 123,000 participants who were 60 or older. The mean follow-up time of the study was ten years. The researchers discovered that compared to inactive individuals, those with low levels of activity were 22% less likely to die. According to the author of the study, Dr. David Hupin of the University Hospital of Saint-Etienne, the low level of exercise was equal to a 15-minute brisk walk on a daily basis.
Furthermore, the risk of dying in people with a medium level of physical activity was 28% and 35% in people with high activity levels. Findings from the study suggest that the higher the activity levels, the more health benefits. The study also goes to show that the advancing age doesn’t have to be an excuse not to exercise. Instead, it should serve as motivation to be physically active. Exercising for 15 minutes a day is a reasonable target for older adults.
