Keeping Your Classic Car in Great Shape
Classic cars are timeless and priceless not to mention really rare. Maintaining one properly is a necessity if you want to keep it in great shape. Since these cars are not in production any longer, car parts are not easy to find. Here are a few tips and tricks to keep your prized possession on the road.
Give the Car In-depth Detailing
Always give your classic car thorough body detailing. Wash it thoroughly to remove salt and grime from top to bottom. When washing, always use a pH-balanced cleanser that doesn’t strip off the wax and use a body conditioner to maintain its shine. Give it a good scrub with a non-abrasive sponge and then dry off with fluffy towels or shammies. Don’t skip the hand-drying process because it will create water spots that could mark on the paint. After that, wax the outer surfaces of the car. Lubricate all moving parts and clean the inside of the car, which includes vacuuming, wiping the windows and surfaces, and removing any upholstery stains.
Avoid Extreme Temperatures
Keep the car out of extreme temperatures to preserve the paint and life of your car. Extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, can affect the paint of your car, giving it a dull look over time.
Store the Car Properly
Always store classic vehicles in an enclosed space, such as a garage, away from direct sunlight, dust, and dirt. When storing your car for an extended period of time, always remember to drain all the fluids inside the reservoirs, such as the gas tank and engine crankcase. When not in use, cover the vehicle with a cover made from soft cotton and allow proper air circulation inside the car by rolling the windows down. Using an opened box of baking soda or mothballs inside the car will help keep moisture from building up.
Remove the Battery
If you want your battery to survive for a long time, remove it from the car carefully and store it in a dry place when storing the car for an extended period of time. This will prevent the car from draining the power from the battery.
Start the Car Periodically
Reinstall the battery and take your car for a spin at least once a month to prevent corrosion from building up and to keep it in good running order.
Take the Car in for a Checkup
Have your classic car checked regularly to ensure it remains in good running order. A classic car is often the pride and joy of owners and can last for many years when cared for properly. These cars can, however, become very expensive if maintenance is neglected. To keep your neighbours envious of your ride and draw attention when riding down the road, proper maintenance is an absolute must.
