Ladies, Let’s Have a Makeover!
Makeup is a wonderful form of self-expression and creativity. With age, our skin changes and so do our makeup needs. What may have worked for us in our youth, might not be a good fit anymore. You have a right to feel good about yourself, and if makeup helps you with that, then we’ve got you covered.
#1 Hydrate & Protect
The first step is to use a good moisturizer that suits your skin type. Heavy creams do not sit well under makeup so it is important to pick one that will sink into your skin.
Follow that up with an SPF50+ sunscreen. High protection sunscreens are essential to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Stick to lightweight formulas that don’t make your skin greasy.
#2 Prime it up
A primer helps makeup longevity, and a pea-sized amount is all you need to create a smooth canvas for your make-up application. Look for a primer containing hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid.
#3 Foundation
Stick to dewy, cream, and water-based foundations. Keep your application light for seamless coverage. Avoid matte foundations as they accentuate the lines on your face. If you want to skip foundation, a bb cream or a tinted sunscreen can be used instead.
Tip: Use a damp makeup sponge to blend your foundation and achieve a smooth, streak-free finish.
#4 Conceal
If you are looking to cover up your dark circles or spots, choose a nourishing concealer that is a shade lighter than your natural skin tone. Apply a light layer and pat it onto your skin gently with your fingers or a damp makeup sponge.
#5 Colour Correcting
Some of us need a little bit more help in covering up our dark spots and uneven skin tone. If you feel that foundation and concealer don’t cut it for you, give colour correcting a go.
Colour correcting is a clever technique using a range of colours to conceal any skin discolouration. For example, yellow cancels out purple bruises and veins. Green cancels out red, inflamed skin. Peach cancels out dark circles and spots. NYX Cosmetics and L’Oreal both carry affordable colour correcting products in Priceline.
Colour correctors should be applied AFTER primer and BEFORE foundation and concealer. Use sparingly on targeted areas.
#6 Minimal Powdering
A light layer of powder is all that is needed to keep your foundation in place. Too much of powder and your skin will look cakey. In fact, if your skin is not too oily, just skip powdering altogether.
#7 Bronze it up
If you’re a sucker for that sun-kissed look, cream contour sticks are a must-have. The shade should only be one shade darker than your natural skin colour.
Use the stick to draw a line just under each cheekbone and on your forehead, along your hairline. With your fingers or a damp makeup sponge, blend upwards into your skin. There you have it: you are now a bronzed goddess with chiselled cheekbones.
#8 Get Cheeky
Opt for cream blushes to perk up your face. Rosy cheeks can make you look fresh and lovely. Who doesn’t love a pop of colour?
#9 Eye-catching Powdering
Cream eyeshadows are so trendy now and they are perfect for mature skin since it won’t settle into your lines. You can use your fingers to apply them onto your eyes and make them instantly radiant. To avoid smudging, don’t forget to use an eyeshadow primer in advance.
Subtle colours like green, blue, or even a brown, can give a desirable softness to your eyes. Top it off with a long-lasting black mascara and it can bring your whole look together.
For a more natural look, you can always skip eyeshadow and just apply mascara to your lashes to give your eyes a beautiful lift.
#10 Brows
For sparse brows, you can fill them in with a brow pencil followed by a brow gel to keep it all in place. If you have light coloured hair, your brows can be a shade or 2 darker to make them stand out.
Or, you could always get your eyebrows tinted or microbladed professionally and skip this step.
#11 Shine on
Just the slightest touch of a cream highlighter on your cheekbones can give you a youthful glow. You can also add some shimmer on the inner corner of your eyes for that dazzling, wide-awake look.
#12 Pout
To complete the look, add a burst of colour with a vibrant lipstick. You can use a lip balm before your lipstick application for long-lasting moisture.
Drawing in your lips with a lip liner can help define and contour them for that extra plumpness.
#13 You’re all set
Just spritz your face with a setting spray and you’re good to go. Your makeup will stay intact and flawless all day.
It may seem overwhelming, but a little bit of experimenting can give you the confidence and knowledge on what suits you and which products you can forgo. The goal is to enhance your OWN beauty and to empower you to feel like the best version of yourself. Whether you love a full glam look, a natural one, or no makeup at all, YOU do YOU.
