Markets on the Gold Coast

Basket of vegitables

We are really lucky in the Gold Coast to have so many markets that we can visit. We have markets ranging from regular farmers markets at a variety of venues, an organic market and several arts and crafts markets.

Markets can be enjoyed at any age. They are fun, relaxing and allow us to combine outdoor activity with shopping. And one of the great things is that they are a feast for all the senses – the colours and smells are refreshing and you can touch your food instead of just touching a plastic wrapping.

The colours and smells at a market just cannot be replicated in a supermarket or department store. Stores have their own benefits like an almost limitless variety and organized efficiency, but they do appear a little sterile in comparison to markets.

We are familiar with the charm of going to an open-air market. However, beyond the pure fun of it, markets have a few deeper and subtler advantage as well. Where else can you speak to the artist who painted the painting or created that piece of art? You can ask the true meaning behind a painting and get to know what was in the artist’s mind and what he or she was feeling when they – created their work. And you can talk to the farmer and ask him which part of the field he plants cabbages or corn or carrots and what time of day he harvested all that fantastically fresh fruit. This kind of closeness gives you fresh respect and appreciation of what you buy at the market. It’ll change your whole attitude to what you eat and the arts and craft you buy.
